Chapter 14
Scarlet
âThatâs great news. Iâm happy for you. You have to believe that.â Nealâs smile doesnât quite reach his eyes, but I know heâs being honest. He genuinely likes and cares for me.
Like, well, thatâs where the problem lies. I want him to like me the way I like him, just as a good friend. Not more than that. But not all our wishes come true, and Iâm lucky, no extremely lucky that my biggest wish that had the slimmest possibility of ever coming true not only took flight, but it happened in the most splendid way possible and I canât possibly ask for anything more. So rather than wishing and waiting for Neal to give up on me, I should nip the flower in the bud and be honest with him and not just string him along, acting none the wiser. Iâm better than that. Even if it means losing him as a friend, I wonât lie or hide anything from him. He is the only one amongst my friends I can trust this secret with.
âIâm sorry, Neal. I didnât want to hurt you and yet, I might have ended up giving you the wrong signs.â
âNo. You didnât. Donât say that, please.â He turns in his chair to give me the stink eye.
When Noah left for work in the morning for some urgent meeting with his staff after spending the whole day with me yesterday, I took my momâs car and came over to Nealâs place. Noah doesnât trust me with his Fordy just yet.
âI like you and I made that obvious. Iâm not ashamed of it and itâs understandable if you donât feel the same about me. Happens. You never hinted at anything else. Iâm glad I found you when I did, Scarlet. If friendship is all you can offer me, Iâm fine with that. I donât want to lose you. Thatâs all.â
âI donât want to lose you either.â I scoot to the edge of the bed to get closer to him. âI was so scared that this would change things between us, and you would feel awkward around me. But I couldnât not tell you the truth. As a friend I canât hide such a big thing from you.â
His earlier frown morphs into a tight smile. âIâm glad you told me. Itâs good to know. I mean, to be honest I wish things hadnât turned out the way it didâ¦â
I gasp, brows furrowed in anger and he immediately pauses, trying to retract his words.
âIâm sorry that came out wrong.â He groans, hanging his head.âThis is hard, but I need to say this. You were honest with me and so itâs my turn. I wish we could get together. I obviously like you and I really think we could you know, keep each other happy and gel well and stuff. Thatâs what I meant. This new development crushed my plans. Iâm happy for you, but I still wish we had met before, and Iâd gotten a real chance with you.
